The story

Most people meet oud by accident. Scent Salim has spent sixteen years making sure it happens on purpose.

The Boar Lane shop has been selling Arabian and Asian fragrance since 2010, and there are now over a thousand creations on the shelves — attar oils, sprays, incense and gift sets, with more than five hundred combinations that can be blended to order.

What they really sell is the time. You can walk in knowing nothing about oud, say what you like and what you don't, and one of their perfumers will work through it with you until something fits. You can book the session in advance if you'd rather not be rushed, and there's a one-to-one consultation over video for people who can't get to Leeds.

Nothing here is meant to be bought in a hurry. You're expected to smell things, change your mind, and go back to the one that stayed with you.

Scent Salim, where thousands of bottles stop being daunting

A wall of oud on Boar Lane, and someone who can actually narrow it down for you.

Walk in and the scale is the first thing you notice. There are thousands of perfumes in here, which is either the whole appeal or the whole problem, depending entirely on whether anybody helps you.

Haroon helped. That is the difference between a shop with a lot of stock and a shop worth the trip — someone who knows what is on those shelves and is willing to give you the time. We came out with Golden Dusk, and with a clearer idea of what we actually like than we walked in with.

If you have never bought oud before and would not know where to begin, begin here. And if you already know exactly what you are after, there is more range on Boar Lane than any department store counter is going to show you.
